The CD is composed of six Porter originals, one Thelonious Monk composition, and a piece out of the Stephen Foster songbook. Porter's The Circle Is Unbroken, Meditation On A Rainy Day, Quarter To Four, and Blue In Rose are part of a series of compositions influenced by the cyclical nature of North Indian classical music. As Larry explains, "In the typical Western song structure, the melody comes to an end shortly before the form ends. In these pieces the melody loops around, obscuring the sense of beginning and end. This creates a feeling of continuous flow."
Bassist Johannes Fink and drummer Oliver Steidle are mainstays in the Berlin scene, and both realize the full potential of this repertoire through a combination of experience, adventurousness, audacity, creativity, and instinctive prescience.
The Larry Porter Trio plays an intimate music
in which space, inference, and allusion help
to round out a musical viewpoint that spans
the history of jazz and beyond. But it's
not history revisited; it's history revised
and updated. It is a music that encompasses
the influences of other cultures coming full
circle back to the essential: creating music
with a depth of meaning and beauty. For Porter,
music is a spiritual force, one that allows
us, at least for a moment, to sense the ineffable.
